Many budding pet owners choose to adopt classic and popular dogs. Some, however, seek a slightly more unique breed.
The American Kennel Club releases a list of the most popular dog breeds every year, with Labrador Retrievers always at the top of the list. With 197 dog breeds ranked by the AKC, pet parents don’t often hear about the least popular dog breeds on the bottom. Many are often overshadowed by their more popular cousins, but in many ways they are very similar. Some of these lesser known dogs require a grooming or training regiment, while others are just not as prevalent in rescues, shelters or responsible breeders across the United States. Although these pups don’t make many top 10 or 20 lists, they are still adorable and sweet pups for the right owner!
15 least popular dog breeds to adopt
1. Cesky Terrier
Cesky Terriers are a mix of a Scottish Terrier and a Sealyham Terrier. Although their appearance may be a bit odd, these adorable puppies are very calm and quiet dogs, making them a great option for families.
2. Norwegian Lundehund
These puppies are also a little odd and round out the bottom of the AKC dog list. These smaller dogs weigh only 30 pounds at most and live up to 15 years. Norwegian Lundehund are very conscious and faithful. But these little puppies are also full of energy. They were bred for hunting puffins in Norway and are a shorter-haired spitz breed. Another unique trait is their six toes and extra pads, which were developed to help ascend and descend rocky and uneven surfaces along the Scandinavian coast. If that wasn’t unique enough, they’re also contortionists; their bodies can bend to accommodate smaller spaces, which helps them get in and out of small spaces along the coastline.
3. Neapolitan Mastiff
Mastiffs, in general, are big dogs and don’t usually end up on many hot lists. the Neapolitan Mastiff is no different. These large puppies weigh around 150 pounds but typically only live to be nine years old. Their lineage dates back to the Romans, when they were used as guard dogs. 4. Wire Fox Terrier
Wire Fox Terriers are known favorites at dog shows, but aren’t as popular for the average dog owner. Males reach a weight of around 18 pounds, while females are only slightly smaller at 15 to 17 pounds. They are incredibly affectionate with their families and do great with young children!
5. American Foxhounds
American Foxhounds get along with just about everyone in the family. They enjoy being around children, cats, and other dogs, but dog owners need to understand what awaits them with this breed. Just like their cousin, the English Foxhound, these puppies were bred in America to hunt. Their legs are designed to chase prey and they need lots of daily exercise to be happy. Vocalizations like barking and being naturally born to run may explain why this breed ranks among the least popular dog breeds.
6. Komondor
This Hungarian shepherd is very popular in his country of origin but has not established himself in America. These pups are also far from hairless, as their signature coat looks almost like a ragged mop. These puppies need a specific grooming and care regiment because it is not recommended brush or bathe their corded coat more than necessary. They were used to herding livestock, so they needed a home with plenty of room to move around and a job to do.
7. Otterhounds
Otterhounds are a larger pup. Males can weigh up to 115 pounds, while females weigh up to 80 pounds, and this breed lives between 10 and 13 years. These dogs have a gentle temperament and are generally very easy-going. These pups are excellent swimmers as they were traditionally bred to hunt otters along coastal towns all over England.

9. Skye’s Burrow
The Skye Terrier is a small, flat-coated dog with furry, pointing ears. These dogs stand 9 to 10 inches tall with small, short legs. These gorgeous puppies hailed from harsh terrain in the Afghan mountains. Although they may seem delicate, these puppies were hounds with large pads to help them navigate the hard ground.
