The Cavoodles were crowned number one dog breed in Australia after thousands turned to furry companions to bring them through Covid-19.

Pet Insurance Australia has revealed the country’s top 10 dog breeds that Australians have been buying since the pandemic began.

The fan-favorite cavoodle – a mix of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Toy Poodle – came out ahead of the pack.

A cavoodle can start as low as $ 2,500, but dog lovers have seen prices rise dramatically due to increased demand during covid, with some costing as much as $ 6,000.

The French Bulldog landed in second place, along with the Golden Retriever, the family’s favorite Labrador, the border collie and mdachshund iniature next closely.

While the German Shepherd, Maltese Cross, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and Golden Doodle round out the top 10 popular dog breeds.

“It’s no surprise that Cavoodle came out on top. This wonderful breed is well known for their lovable nature, intelligence and ability to love everyone in the house, including other pets, ”said Nadia Crighton, spokesperson for Pet Insurance Australia.

“French Bulldogs are also a popular choice for many families. They are bright and affectionate and certainly have all the charm, plus they also make good watch dogs. They simply adore those who love them and make wonderful family companions.

Pet insurance has reported seeing huge demand for puppies and dogs amid the global pandemic in 2020.

“When the first lockdown was enforced across Australia there was definitely a boom in demand for puppies,” Ms. Crighton said.

“It’s interesting a year later what breeds Australians were looking for during this difficult time.”

This is an international trend, with the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association in the UK indicating that around 3.2 million UK households have acquired a pet since March 2020.

In Australia, puppy prices have exploded out of control as the RSPCA has registered 26,000 online adoption applications since the start of the COVID-10 pandemic.

“With many Australians looking for comfort and a good distraction with a new canine companion, we were interested to see what breeds people were buying or adopting,” said Crighton.

The results for the Top 10 Dog Breeds are based on pet owners who have purchased insurance for their new dog with Pet Insurance Australia in the past 12 months.

It is interesting to note that the percentage of policies between tenth and second place is very minimal. The cavoodle stands out with a 50% higher political support than the French Bulldog.

“It just shows that Australians love a variety of purebred and mixed breed dogs. It’s nice to see so many family favorites stand the test of time like the Golden Retriever and the adorable Labrador, ”she added.
