A tasting menu where each dish is in song …

Few places capture the magic of Dubai like Jumeirah Al Qasr. The Grand Hotel is a magnificent property nestled next to the Madinat Jumeirah souk, glorious waterways, and the ocean. There really is something beautiful to look at everywhere you turn.

One of its finest is French Riviera, a fairly new restaurant (it opened in June 2020) that has intimate dining rooms accessed by candle-lit aisles. We went to try their intriguing new seven-course tasting menu accompanied by wines.

The Franco-Mediterranean dinner begins with freshly baked bread and a deliciously thin and crispy truffle pizzetta, garnished with arugula, crème fraîche and fresh truffle.

Next comes the “trilogy”, composed of a frayed blue crab, a duo of beets and apples accompanied by a mustard sorbet with herbs and basil and a delicious dish of smoked octopus. As lessons continue, different wines are expertly chosen to complement the flavors of each dish.

Along the way, the onion tatin is, in English, a caramelized onion accompanied by a parmesan ice cream, both strong and spicy, and easily one of the best dishes of the night.

There’s a fregola drizzled with an orange reduction and an interpretation of the traditional La Bouillabaisse, both of which are extremely satisfying, and the beef tenderloin, with a creamy mashed potato and bourguignon sauce, which is cooked perfectly to our liking.

We end with a French toast topped with a creamy vanilla ice cream from Madagascar, a decadent chocolate tart and a revisited millefeuille.

Take your time with this tasting menu and you won’t be overwhelmed by its many dishes. If you go about it right, you will have a wonderful evening, perfect for a date or a fancy dinner with friends. It is the epitome of a luxurious evening in Dubai.

Côte d’Azur, Jumeirah Al Qasr, Dubai, from 6.30 p.m., tasting menu 550 Dhs (non-vegetarian), 460 Dhs (vegetarian), plus 360 Dhs with food and wine pairing. Phone: (0) 4 432 32 32. jumeirah.com
