Labrador Retriever tops list compiled by nation’s largest dog daycare and boarding franchise for National Dog Day
WESTMINSTER, Col., August 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — In honor of National Dog Day on August 26, Camp Bow-Wow, North America the largest dog daycare and boarding franchise, shares the best dog breeds for 2022 based on its database of nearly 400,000 campers across the United States and Canada.
While kennel clubs share annual lists of the most popular breeds based on purebred dog registrations, Camp Bow Wow’s Top 10 list includes purebred dogs, mixed breed dogs (listed by their main breed) and popular crosses, including two doodles.

For the fifth year in a row, the hugely popular Labrador Retriever (including Lab mixes) topped the list. The Goldendoodle comes in second, followed by the mixed and purebred German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Australian Shepherd, Pit Bull Terrier, Beagle, Husky, and Boxer. The Labradoodle completes the top 10.
According to Camp Bow Wow’s animal health and behavior expert, Erin AskelandMSc, CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed for many reasons.
“Labs are very versatile and have a friendly, outgoing temperament,” Askeland says. “They are excellent companions for adventurous outdoor activities and for relaxing around the house. All of this makes them excellent family dogs.”
However, Askeland says breed is only one aspect to consider when choosing a pet. She says to consider whether your lifestyle is more sedentary or active, whether you have or plan to have children, how much time you can devote to socializing and training a new puppy, and how much time you spend away from home. It’s also important to consider whether you prefer small or large dogs, how much time you can devote to grooming, and whether you want your dog to engage in a specific activity.
“While a dog’s breed can influence certain tendencies and behaviors, it’s important not to let breed alone determine whether to bring a specific dog into your home,” Askeland says. “At Camp Bow Wow, we love all breeds – including all of the wonderful mixes we see every day – and believe that every dog deserves a loving home. Animal shelters and sanctuaries have many breeds and mixes that will make great additions to your family.”
No matter the breed of dog, a great way to celebrate National Dog Day is to give your dog a fun day at camp for socialization, exercise and enrichment. For more information, visit www.campbowwow.com.
