The salon, called The Dog Grooming Nerd, opened on Monday morning (April 19) and offers bathing, clipping, trimming and trimming services for every breed of dog and every type of dog owner.

Owner Maria Bjorn, 29, entered the industry several years ago, seeking to turn her passion for animals into a viable career.

“I have always loved animals a lot. I grew up on a farm so working with them is something I’ve always wanted to do, ”she said. “Animals like you, no matter how bad you’ve had a day, they’re always happy to see you. “

Ms Bjorn moved from Finland to Bognor Regis twelve years ago to live with her partner and, after graduating with a dog grooming degree from Brinsbury College, started working at Dapper Dogsin Felpham.

When that salon closed in March, the layoff put Ms. Bjorn in a difficult position.

“It was a choice to go back to retail in the midst of a pandemic or create my own place,” she said, “and it didn’t take long to decide what I wanted to do.”

So far, it seems to have been a good decision. The news of the store’s arrival was greeted with palpable excitement.

Ms Bjorn said: “It’s really good. We are fully booked for the first week and partially booked the following week.

“A lot of dog owners sort of follow groomers and their reputation. So it’s really good that people have that kind of loyalty. To follow me on this terrifying new adventure that no one knows if it will work or not.

Ms Bjorn also took advantage of the pandemic to launch a YouTube channel where she regularly discusses the realities of working in a dog salon. Ms Bjorn said: ‘When the first lockdown happened and I was sitting at home 24/7, all of a sudden I thought I should do something and start a business. chain. I’ve always been a bit of a nerd anyway. I played on YouTube and that sort of thing, so I wanted to combine that side of my interests with my job and it kind of unfolded from there. Now I also have a salon of the same name so it’s sort of becoming an empire!

With more than a thousand and a half subscribers and some of its videos accumulating more than ten thousand views, the channel is experiencing rapid and dazzling success, loaded with a momentum that Ms. Bjporn hopes to maintain in her new activity: “I think that people like seeing the process, for people to see what’s going on behind the scenes, I think that will give them a little more confidence. They kind of get to know me a bit too, if they haven’t met before while I’m grooming elsewhere, ”she said.
