perfect doggie premiered on Tuesday night, and while many enjoyed the dog grooming contest show, there was a big backlash from viewers on Twitter who thought it was abusive. The new series is produced and hosted by Rebel Wilson, who comes from a long line of dog lovers.

“I’m actually a fourth-generation dog shower,” Wilson told contestants. “I was a junior champion handler, so yeah, trust me when I say I know my Shih Tzu.”

Wilson isn’t the only dog lover involved with the show, which also features The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Lisa Vanderpump, veterinarian Callie Harris and celebrity groomer Jorge Bendersky as judges.

The premiere showed incredible grooming transformations, but many viewers on social media wondered how safe it was for dogs. The majority of dogs are very well groomed and often dyed to match their design theme.

Although the grooming may seem excessive to some viewers, the groomers insisted that everything was dog-friendly. “It’s all safe for dogs,” contestant Jayne Gallagher said. “We respect the dog above all else.” And that sentiment was also echoed by some viewers on Twitter.

perfect doggie airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. on ABC.
