The dog breeds that live the longest

Just as we intend to live our best life, we want our dog’s life to be happy, healthy and sustainable too. And while owners may think it’s an old wives’ tale that small dog breeds have a longer lifespan than large dog breeds, this is actually a true statement. Diana Hightower, President of Rescue and transport of Chihuahua, told us about dogs and their varying life expectancies. “Although the age range is not breed specific, it is true that small dogs tend to live longer than large dogs,” she explains. “A larger dog will have a lifespan of eight to 10 years, while smaller breeds (like Chihuahuas) can typically live up to 15 to 20 years.”

Naturally, the lifespan of your pup also depends on the quality of their care as well as your lifestyle together. It doesn’t matter if you like a Toy Poodle or one Great Dane, Hightower reveals that you can make changes to extend your dog’s lifespan. “The steps owners can take to prolong the lives and happiness of their dogs include providing an overall safe environment for their pets,” says Hightower. “This includes maintaining a healthy weight, daily exercise, relaxation and regular veterinary check-ups. Good quality veterinary care including annual check-ups, vaccinations, dental care, monthly heartworm prevention and chips, are essential.”

What if you’re a first-time dog owner looking for a specific breed known for its long lifespan? In fact, these breeds of dogs do exist. Here we dive into the dogs with the longest lifespans.
